Chiropractic Treatment for Sinus Infections

Chiropractic Treatment for Sinus Infections

What is a sinus infection?

Sinuses are hollow cavities in the facial bone of the human skull located above the brow, bridge of the nose, and beneath the cheekbones. These hollow cavities on the facial bone are lined with different mucous membranes, which provide moisture to the sinus cavity. The main purpose of the sinus cavity is to moisturize and filter the air we inhale. These hollow cavities are connected to the nasal passage of the nose. While you may not know this, our chiropractor near Bohemia at Connetquot Chiropractic can treat your condition and get your sinuses feeling better!

Sinus infections of the nasal passages and sinuses could be caused by either bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. Sinus infections could also be caused by allergies or irritation of the sinus cavity. This infection results in the inflammation of the sinus cavity, causing the cavity to be swollen and tender due to retention of fluid in these areas. Sinus infections are referred to as sinusitis.

Symptoms of this infection could range from mild to severe, with signs of headaches, coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, and discharge. Other symptoms may include a feeling of heaviness or pressure on one side of the head, in the eyes, nose or cheeks. If a sinus infection is left untreated, it can lead to more complicated and serious conditions.

Sinus infections can be classified based on the persistence of the symptoms. They include:

  • Acute: acute sinusitis is a type of sinus infection that takes hold fast and lasts for up to 10 to 14 days.

  • Chronic: this type of infection last for eight weeks or longer. This is mostly caused by a bacteria or fungi.

  • Recurrent: a patient is said to have recurrent sinusitis infection when they manifest the symptoms of this infection several times in a year.

What causes a sinus infection?

  • Germ invasion: sinus infections are the result of germs, like bacteria, fungi, and viruses, infecting and multiplying in a person’s sinus cavity. This infection generally takes place when the cavity becomes filled with mucus that cannot drain normally into the nasal cavity. Inflammation of the sinuses even results them becoming more blocked. These warm and damp conditions would provide a perfect breeding ground for these germs. Infection begins in the sinuses when these germs begin to reproduce.

  • Allergies: the human body reacts to allergies the same way it reacts to the invasion of germs. The immune system will attack these irritants, such as pollens or dust, by increasing the production of mucus or sneezing. This leaves the individual defenseless against different germs that will initiate sinusitis infection.

  • Facial morphology and lifestyle: most people are predisposed to developing sinusitis because of the shape of their sinuses and other qualities. On the other hand, certain lifestyles like smoking might render an individual susceptible to sinus infection. Smoking might not directly lead to sinusitis, but the smoke generated will irritate the nasal cavity and cause a sinus infection.

RISK FACTORS FOR SINUSITIS INFECTION

Certain individuals are more susceptible to sinusitis infection than others due to certain factors which could facilitate the manifestation of the infection. Examples include:

  • Compromised immune system

  • Facial trauma or deformity

  • Severe seasonal allergies

  • Exposure to irritants

  • Nasal polyps

Chiropractic treatment for Sinus infection

Our Ronkonkoma chiropractor at Connetquot Chiropractic primarily treats subluxations to ensure an optimally performing nervous system. In cases of cranial bone misalignment, we can correct this by performing a specific nasal technique called sinus adjustment. This type of treatment deals with sinus drainage techniques, such as cranial and facial bone adjustments, as well as lymphatic pump drainage techniques, which teach you how to self-stretch your sinuses. This can be done by pulling the cheeks outward in different positions around the head.

Connetquot Chiropractic’s Ronkonkoma chiropractor has proven this technique to be effective. These techniques aim at relieving blockage, aligning the nasal pathways, and relieving the built-up pressure inside the head, which will ensure the cerebrospinal fluid flows easily inside the skull.

We recommend supplementary therapy, which can be done at home, as part of the rehabilitation process. These therapies include the application of a warm or cold compress to the facial regions that are hurting from the sinus infection. This will help relieve the pressure put on the nervous system, which can hinder the optimal functioning of the body.

At Connetquot Chiropractic, we have been treating our clients’ issues and conditions for years with professionalism and unconditional care. If you’d like to conquer your allergies, contact our chiropractor near Bohemia today!
