The benefits of epidural injections for back pain

Did you know that 50% of all working Americans admit to having back pain each year? In fact, back pain is among the leading causes for missed work days in the United States. And, According to the American Chiropractic Association, back pain is even the second most common reason for a visit to the doctor’s office as well! Back pain is so common because nearly anything can cause it. Several causes of back pain are strained muscles or ligaments, ruptured disks, irritated joints, and accidents. With that said, simply bending over to pick up something from the floor can end in pain. Arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and other diseases also influence back pain.

Although back pain is so easily triggered, there are some forms of treatment or relief. A very beneficial combination of treatments for back pain is epidural injections followed up with chiropractic care. Epidural steroid injections include corticosteroids and a numbing agent to help patients better cope with their back pain. The shot is delivered between the protective covering of the spinal nerves and the bony vertebrae.

The most noticeable benefit from epidural injections is pain relief. The level of pain relief administered, however, varies among patients. This is usually due to the level of back pain/issues before the injection. Unfortunately, the pain relief is temporary, lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a year. While this treatment cannot be overused, you are still able to receive a few each year if you choose to. Your doctor will have the properly suggested amount based on the discomfort you are experiencing.

Since the epidural injections help reduce pain, it also allows patients to get more out of their chiropractic session. With less pain, the patient is able to complete stretches and exercises with minimal limitations. The more effective the stretches and exercises, the more pain it will help to reduce and the more mobility it will grant!
