Is Electrical Stimulation the Right Treatment for You?

If chiropractic adjustments have not been enough, electrical muscle stimulation in Ronkonkoma could be right for you. At Connetquot Chiropractic, electrical stimulation therapy is offered to many patients in need of further back pain relief.

Before discussing any further why electrical stimulation therapy might be the right treatment for you, we must stress that it is a controversial one which, even at its very best, does not serve as an adequate substitute for your regular exercise routine. That being said, several studies have endorsed its effectiveness at providing temporary pain relief when used in conjunction with more conventional methods.

The most common type of electrical stimulation therapy is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). TENS therapy utilizes a small mechanical device that is attached to the pain sight by a series of wires and sticky conductive pads. The device sends a low-energy electrical current to the pain site with the intention of increasing the blood flow in the area and causing the sore or damaged muscle to contract. At that point, the pain signals sent by the affected nerves to your brain will essentially be scrambled, thus resulting in greater amounts of endorphins being released into your system. Again, TENS has been shown to provide temporary pain relief. It is not recommended for patients suffering from chronic pain because its side effects include skin irritation and burning when used over a prolonged period of time.

TENS, as with all similar electrical stimulation therapies, are not for everyone--the debate over its effectiveness is still alive and well. However, if you have reached a point in the management of your pain where standard chiropractic adjustments alone are simply not enough, we recommend that you make an appointment to visit us and discuss whether or not electrical stimulation therapy would make the right addition for you.
