Sleep is supposed to be a time of rest, however, sometimes sleep brings about some aches and pains that can lead to very frustrating waking hours. When it comes to sleeping, we all have our own way of sleeping, don't we? Some of us like to sleep on our sides, some of us on our backs, and some on our stomach.
When it comes to these different ways of sleeping, our body is affected in different ways, most particularly on the spine.
Some ways of sleeping help by:
- Sleeping on your side with a pillow in between your knees supports hip alignment
- Sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees to support spinal structure
- Sleeping on your stomach with a pillow in front of the pelvis and lower abdomen to lessen strain on the back
No matter which way is most comfortable, always remember to keep your spine aligned to receive the most support.
Pillows definitely help to ensure that falling asleep is a truly comfortable experience, but you must get the right one for the job. When it comes to pillows:
- Using a thin pillow for when you sleep on your back, preferably with memory foam
- Using a firm pillow for when you sleep on your side
- Using a very thin pillow, if anything, for when you sleep on your stomach
When it comes to your mattress, it is recommended to use one with a somewhat firm feel to it. Going with a soft mattress does not support your spinal alignment. On the contrary, studies have revealed that those who sleep on a very firm mattress have unrestful sleep. If at all possible, try to use a memory foam mattress so that it contours with your body for maximum support.
