What is Myofascial Pain?

Myofascial pain syndrome is associated with muscle pain and spasms. While it can be a painful condition to have, finding a chiropractor near Centereach can be your best answer to treating pain. At Connetquot Chiropractic, Dr. James Lambert has the experience and passion to help heal his clients.

The most common causes of the myofascial pain syndrome could include:

- Injury to the musculoskeletal system or intervertebral disks

- Poor sleep patterns

- Stressful life situations

- Emotional problems such as depression and anxiety

- Poor posture

- Sitting for a long time in awkward positions

- Nutritional deficiencies

- Lack of exercise

- Hormonal changes like menopause

- Intense cooling of muscles, like when an individual sleeps for long in front of an air conditioner

- Obesity

- Smoking

It is known that the risks of myofascial pain syndrome can lead to a change in the ability of the brain to properly process pain perception. When you have the myofascial pain syndrome, affected areas may include neck pain, upper back pain, and lower back pain, and it usually affects one side of the body more than the other. Tenderness and spasm can also be noticed in the areas affected by the condition.

Other symptoms may include:

- Deep pain in muscles

- Worsening pain when the muscle is overstretched and strained

- Pain that progressively gets worse or doesn’t improve with time

- Painful knots in muscles that produce intense pain when pressed

- Muscles that are weak, stiff, and have a reduced range of motion

How is it diagnosed?

Through an extensive search for myofascial trigger points, the doctor will perform a physical exam on you to better diagnose your condition. When pressing a trigger point, the doctor would be feeling for a twitch in the muscle, otherwise known as a jump sign. There are different kinds of myofascial trigger points:

- Active trigger point

- Latent trigger point

- Secondary trigger point

- Satellite myofascial point.

Whichever technique is used, our chiropractor near Centereach will be able to properly treat your condition and get you on the road to a full recovery. At Connetquot Chiropractic, Dr. Lambert can help you today! Contact us for a meeting.
